Kybella is a non-surgical injectable technique that targets the fat underneath the chin. This treatment is minimally invasive, with no downtime necessary in most cases. The active ingredient in Kybella is identical to deoxycholic acid produced by the body. The synthetic deoxycholic acid works the same way as the natural version to absorb dietary fats.
When injected correctly, Kybella works by destroying fat cells. Once the injections destroy the fat cells, they can no longer accumulate or store fat. This fat cell elimination results in a reduction of fullness below the skin and an improved chin appearance.
Before Kybella treatment can begin, patients need to have a consultation to make sure they are the right candidate for this procedure. Candidates for Kybella treatment should be 18 years or older. These injections are ideal for people with moderate to severe fat under the chin. People that have received facial surgery or plan on having it in the future may not be good candidates for this procedure.
During a consultation, we will review the patient’s overall health and condition to determine if they are candidates for this procedure. Other reasons that may prevent people from receiving Kybella include:
- Infection or medical condition at or near the injection site
- Trouble swallowing
Preparing for Kybella Treatment
Before Kybella treatment can begin, patients must discuss their medical history with us. We will need to know about any cosmetic procedures done to the face, neck, or chin. Patients should also be sure to notify us about any bleeding or swallowing issues.
Since Kybella is a non-surgical treatment, there is little preparation required beforehand. We recommend that patients schedule this procedure way ahead of any major events. Patients must wash their faces well before the injections to minimize the risk of infection. It is also advisable to avoid taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen before the appointment to reduce post-treatment bruising.
Before the procedure, we will demarcate the injection sites. We may also apply a numbing agent or ice the area to minimize discomfort. To properly inject Kybella, we will pinch the extra fat under the chin between two fingers to isolate it from the underlying structures. Kybella is then injected perpendicularly to the skin until the needle is midway into the underlying extra subcutaneous fat layer.
Patients typically receive 20 to 30 injections during one treatment session. Some patients can receive up to 50 injections during their appointment, depending on the extent of submental fullness. The entire procedure usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes. After the injections, the treatment site may appear fuller than before, but this fullness will decrease as the swelling goes down.
After treatment, Kybella will gradually eliminate the fat cells. The body will metabolize the cells over the next few weeks. The number of sessions will vary for each person’s needs and goals. We will ensure each patient receives the customized treatment they need to achieve the change in appearance they desire.
Most people will need multiple sessions to achieve their desired results. While people can receive up to six Kybella treatments, they must wait at least one month between each session. In a clinical trial, 82.4% of participants reported significantly improved satisfaction with their appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes double chins?
A double chin occurs when an extra layer of fat develops under the skin. Although a double chin can be a sign of weight gain or obesity, this is not always the case. As people age, their skin loses elasticity, leading to sagging skin, contributing to a double chin’s appearance. Genes can also play a role in double chins since people with a family history of this extra fat are more likely to develop one as well.
How much does Kybella cost?
The cost of Kybella treatment will vary for each patient. It depends on various factors, including the number of treatments needed. Since Kybella is a cosmetic procedure, most insurance providers may not provide coverage. People should contact their insurance provider before seeking treatment for more information. We can also review options and our treatment procedure during a consultation appointment
How long do Kybella results last?
Once Kybella destroys the fat cells, they will not return. After patients reach their desired outcome, they can enjoy their results for many years to come. However, this is contingent on whether patients are conscious about their diet. While Kybella can eliminate the existing fat cells, it is still possible to develop new ones.
Are there any side effects associated with Kybella?
Kybella is non-surgical and minimally invasive.Common but temporary side effects include pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness. Although rare, some more serious complications include facial muscle weakness, an uneven smile, trouble swallowing, or nerve injury in the jaw. Patients experiencing any post-treatment discomfort or severe side effects should contact us immediately.
How does Kybella feel?
Kybella injections are done with a very thin needle. Local anesthetics or a topical numbing agent can help reduce any pain during the injection process. The most common side effect of Kybella is soreness. Patients can use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage this discomfort.
